Project Grant ~ het cultuurfonds

Very happy to receive a project grant from het cultuurfonds to execute my garden plans at my studio Square 28 Coöperatie at de Heining in Amsterdam, starting in 2025. I’ll built raised flower beds with different themes and approaches to extend and deepen gardening as part of my artistic practice and medium. It will be a place of process, echange, material making and it will be also a work by itself. Along the way, I’ll develop an artist's book with materials from the garden and different perspectives on transformation, which is part of cycles in nature, arts and our lives.

Triënnale fan Beetstersweach

Kunsthuis SYB is happy to announce the 4th edition of the Triënnale fan Beetstersweach, titled ‘It hûs is net ien’. The exhibition (28.09. - 03.11.2024) brings together works by the residents of the last years and plants the seeds for the upcoming program of 2025-28.

Working from the artistic ecology of Beetsterzwaag, within the bilingual province of Friesland, the exhibition embraces domesticity as a methodology. It is a modest attempt to enrich the interregional artistic dialogue in the Netherlands by asking how personal spaces can be understood as epicenters of political dynamics.

Participating artists: Sol Archer - Olivia D’Cruz - Philipp Gufler - Ola Hassanain - Antonio de la Hera & Honey Jones-Hughes - it is part of an ensemble (bas van den hurk & Reinout Scholten van Aschat & Jochem Laarhoven) - Publik Universal Frxnd (fka Richard John Jones) - Steven Jouwersma - Sanne Kabalt - Alban Karsten - Pia Louwerens & Katinka van Gorkum - Pilar Mata Dupont & Erika Roux - Charlotte Eta Mumm - Cosy Pièro - Rory Pilgrim - Liza Prins - Carmen Schabracq - Selma Selman - Wessel Verrijt - Louwrien Wijers

Residency 'Thread', Senegal

Incredibly happy for the invitation by the Josef & Anni Albers Foundation to take part in their residency program Thread in Senegal. I'll be living and working there during this year's summer. Made possible with a travel grant of Stichting Gerbrandy Cultuurfonds, Netherlands.

Thread is a cultural center and artist's residency program in Sinthian, a remote village in eastern Senegal near Tambacounda. In close collaboration with Le Korsa, it enables artists from around the world to advance their work in an exceptional setting. Not only in the sense of nature and culture, but also regarding the architecture of the residency building. Designed pro-bono by Toshiko Mori Architect, and built by a local team of contractors, Thread combines local materials and building customs with an innovative design and specific geometry.

When: July 25th to Sept 1st, 2024.
Where: Thread, Sinthian, Senegal.

Kuš! special edition: Elastic Spaces

Next to the development of the sculptures for the exhibition of 'Sculpture Quadrennial Riga 2024', Charlotte Eta Mumm is cooperating with Kuš!, a Latvian comic art publisher. Together with the co-founder and editor David Schilter, they've invited several artists to react to Mumm's initial theme ‘Sliding Doors’ and through that the idea of the plasticity of space. The invited artists present varied perspectives on the theme of this special edition, titled ‘Elastic Spaces’, which is published for SQR24. Through the format of the pocket-size magazine, it acts as a public hybrid sculpture which interacts with the observer. It can be taken home and form an invisible network from public space via hands to private homes.

Participating artists are: Müge Yilmaz (NL/TR), Elio J Carranza (NL/DE), Pam Virada (NL/TH), Ceel Mogami de Haas (NL/CH) / Simone Jarvis (NL/CA), Christine Moldrickx (NL/DE), Petra Feriancová (SK), Letizia Calori (IT), Stephan Blumenschein (NL/AT), Holger Bunk (NL/DE), Charlotte Eta Mumm (NL/DE), Madara Krēziņa (LV), Samplerman (FR), José Quintanar (NL/ES), Jeroen Funke (NL), Lai Tat TatWing (HK), Anna Malicka (LV), Bohdana Zaiats (UA), Othman Selmi (TN), Ana Margarida Matos (PT), König Lü. Duo-exhibition: Espèces d’Espaces

Duo show with Stéphanie Baechler at Whitehouse Gallery. in Belgium. This exhibition brings together two artists who address different types of spaces and spatiality. The title is chosen after a book by Georges Perec. His text considers the concept of space concisely, but broadly: an environment in which we find ourselves, which we can observe, but which we rarely subject to deep investigation or reflection.

I'll be showing leaded glass collages and a selection of paintings, unfolding inner spaces and the ∞ metaverse.

Opening Sunday November 5th at 12 noon @ Whitehouse Gallery, Groot Park 2, 3360 Lovenjoel, Belgium. Runs from Nov 6th to Dec 10th, 2023.

Soft Eis, Issue 3 ~ LOSS

SOFT EIS is an independent print magazine published in Berlin. Each issue deconstructs a different topic by pulling at its strings to examine the space between. You'll find a new visual poem of mine 'mine' in the magazine.

50 contributors collaborated with editors and designers to pull apart the topic of LOSS, 224 pages. Whether through the loss of loved ones, land, rituals, autonomy, culture, or dialogue; loss is felt both individually, and as a collective. Through loss, what do we gain? Does loss always equate to the end of something? Is it so easy to box loss into good or bad, and should it be? Where do we go, knowing what we are learning?

Order it at SOFT EIS.

Kunstenfestival Watou 2023 ~ /kom.po'zi.ci.o:/

Delighted that my newly developed work 'Verlies' is part of Art Festival Watou 2023 and generously supported by the Mondriaan Fonds. I've designed and planted a garden with sitting sculptures and a scriptorium as a place of commemoration and contemplation. The title of this garden is 'Verlies', this word has a double meaning. In Dutch it means to lose someone or something. In German, it means: dark, locked place like a dungeon. In this case, the garden and scriptorium offers an open and life-embracing place.

Kunstenfestival Watou combines the work of several contemporary artists and poets on specific locations throughout the village Watou. This year's edition is curated by Edith Doove and the poetry selection is made by Michaël Vandebril. Watou 2023 is given the theme /kom.po’zi.ci.o:/.

Where: Watou, gemeente Poperinge, West-Flanders, Belgium
When: July 1st - September 3rd, 2023. Wednesday to Monday, 10am - 6pm.

This field trip is made possible by mobility program Culture Moves Europe, which is funded the European Union and implemented by the Goethe Institut. Thank you for your trust!

Vassar Review, Issue 8 ~ Interiors & Intimacies

My painting 'möbliertes Portrait h' and images from 'Thresholds and Their Phantoms' are featured in Vassar Review. This beautiful magazine is an international, multidisciplinary literary arts journal that fosters working relationships between the Vassar College faculty, students, and published artists in order to engage its annual theme with care and reflective insight.

Issue 8 ~ Interiors & Intimacies: "The interior is intrinsically the realm of both the private and the cherished. Our interiors are our intimacies. How do these spaces and moments allow for refuge in an increasingly public world? Let us reclaim the interior, both conceptual and physical, and the creative and personal intimacies that flourish within it."

parts of a closed world

During my residency in Wales during spring, I was drawn to the rainy season and the muddy ground. For my newly developed work, I made use of mud as my material and content carrier. In the exhibition at Troy House in London, I’m showing the installation 'parts of a closed world' consisting of a sculpture, drawings in mud and videos, dealing with information processing and their internal transformations in us humans.

Where: Troy House in London, New Union Square, Nine Elms, UK
When: May 12th - August 27th, 2023

Metropolis M review

On the Dutch contemporary art magazine Metropolis M website, is a review about 'What My Hands Know' written by Emma Wiersma.

About my work she writes: (...) Suddenly, the transparent foil sheets in Charlotte Eta Mumms ‘Tresholds and Their Phantoms’ fall into place. Gently rustling they refer, intentionally or unintentionally, to a construction site. The brown stains on the sheets suddenly change from illustrations to remnants of construction work. The potato juice that the artist extracted and hung on the wall stares at me as a matter of course. Even the fifty-plus French fries nailed to the wall at the entrance for ‘Wirkweise’ become part of a sectarian construction work in my imagination. (...)

Groene Amsterdammer review

Online and in print issue Nr.7/2023 of 'De Groene Amsterdammer' you can read the sensitively written article 'Voortbrengenen aanraken' by Roos van der Lint. The article carefully brings together the works and ideas behind two exhibitions, 'Handle with Care' at the Keramiekmuseum Princessehof in Leeuwarden and 'What My Hands Know' at Arti et Amicitiae in Amsterdam, in which the tactility and the making process of our hands are the central motifs.

In both exhibitions, I show works, which are beautifully captured in the article by Roos van der Lint: "Upon entering that space, the foil moves gently rustling on the air moving through our bodies, threatening to touch that body, like a shower curtain. Inside hang beautiful works on paper for which Mumm extracted the liquid extracted from different kinds of potatoes and arranged them in such a way, with her bare hands, that they suggest a certain arrangement, a Grund."

Exhibition: What My Hands Know

Since a bit more than a year, I'm working together with Sara Bjarland on the concept and realization of the group-exhibition What My Hands Know at Arti et Amicitiae in Amsterdam. And now it's there!

In a nutshell the exhibition 'What My Hands Know' is about intuition, materiality and the senses, as well as their productive interplay during artistic working processes. The title refers to our interest in embodied knowledge and to hands as a channel or translator between the inner and the external world. Accompanying the exhibition, there will be a public program consisting of workshops and a lecture on artist's books.

Opening: January 20th at 7-10pm
On view: January 21 - March 11, 2023. Tue - Sun 12 -6pm.
Arti et Amicitiae, Rokin 112/Spui, Amsterdam, Netherlands

Handle with Care

The Princessehof National Museum of Ceramics in Leeuwarden, Netherlands presents the exhibition: Handle with Care. Running from November 26th to October 20th, 2023. This exhibition revolves around the hand and gestures – expressions of intimacy, compassion, serenity, authority, labour and celebration. The ceramics that will be displayed capture the universal role hands and fingers play in the lives of humans and animals. Curator Dr. Wendy Gers selected 37 works relating to this theme for Handle with Care.

My work 'Grund en reason' will be shown. It consists of glazed earthenware with an underglaze writing of a palm reading. Glazes are made from various materials, I collected during my residency at Kunsthuis SYB in Beetsterzwaag this spring/summer. Thank you for your trust and inviting me Wendy Gers.

Join me for the opening on Saturday November 26th. Shortly after the festive opening at 12.00 by Kris Callens, director and Dr. Wendy Gers, curator, I'll give a short presentation about my work. Please visit the website for more details: princessehof.nl

Metropolis M

Online and in the coming print issue of the Dutch contemporary art magazine Metropolis M, is a feature about my work and residency at Kunsthuis SYB written by Maia Paduraru. The title of the article is: Charlotte Eta Mumm – a take on the concept of ‘Grund’ Frisian soils, palm reading, and glaze made of local soil.

You'll find out more about my working process and how I transformed local ground textures into ceramic glazes for plates and bowls with texts from a palm reading. The words Grund en reason were a line of thought in my work process. The German word Grund not only means soil or ground, but also; reason, motive, foundation and cause. It asks for: Why? and looks for a deeper meaning or reasoning.

Bling-Bling?

My ceramic work 'Augenblicksbildung', in which I used among others dichroic glass, is part of the group-exhibition 'Bling-Bling?' at Musée de Carouge. Alchemy and ceramics have always been very close, both technically and metaphorically. Whilst the practice of alchemy formerly sought to turn lead into gold, nowadays it questions the notions of success, wealth and origin which we attach to precious metals. Numerous artists have delved into this question, which is also onomatopoeia for the sound produced by the clash of golden necklaces.

Opening and award ceremony: Saturday, September 17th, 10 -11am
Where: Musée de Carouge, Pl. de Sardaigne 2, 1227 Carouge, Switzerland
When; September 18th - December 11th, 2022

Perhaps love is the most normal thing in the world - hardly anyone will claim not to know what love is. To talk about it is sometimes difficult for us. Love also always seems to be too much or too little, rarely is it simple or enough. As a basic human need it influences our decisions, it can be found in the most beautiful as well as in the most terrible moments of our life. Love has many faces ...

Beginning of September we'll meet finally in Riga itself to get to know each other, further develop our works and to do the necessary physical research. Thanks for inviting us all over to visit Lettland.

The article 'Museum Brot und Kunst zeigt die Kartoffel in der Gegenwartskunst', written by Franziska Wolfinger, circumscribes the potato and her position in contemporary art. Leeuwarder Courant

Giite Brugman wrote an article for the newspaper Leeuwarder Courant about my stay at kunsthuis SYB and my work, which I developed for the final presentation. The article is written in Dutch and has the following title: Charlotte Mumm eindigt residentie in Kunsthuis SYB en serveert Friese lekkernijen op borden met glazuur van onder meer paardenpoep.

Grund

During the 1st part of my residency 'Grund' I collected different types of Frisian soil and other organic material. In the past weeks I've processed the collected material into ceramic glaze, which I used for a table setting of plates, thrown by Ulrike Könecke, and bowls, created by Lutz Könecke (http://www.lutzkoenecke.de/en). On these plates I applied the transcription texts of a palm reading, which I underwent.

For the 2nd stay July 18th to 31st, I'm preparing the presentation of my project. I'll write a text to bring reason, Grund and hands together in a text and to prepare a moment for coffee with Friesian treats and textile collages in the background.

Final presentation: Sunday, July 31st at 15.00 o'clock.
Where: Kunsthuis SYB, Hoofdstraat 70, Beetsterzwaag, Friesland, Netherlands

KUBAPARIS and saliva.live

KUBAPARIS, and Saliva.live covered my solo Thresholds and Their Phantoms. They are both greatly curated online platforms for contemporary art. Thanks for featuring my exhibition at Phoinix.

Solo exhibition: Thresholds and Their Phantoms

When entering my solo Thresholds and Their Phantoms the atmosphere of the space seems provisional. The sensory experience is estranging since the walls are covered with subtle sprayed, thin plastic sheets. Here, I'm showing new partially printed collages called Die Vorläufigkeit der Übertragung (The provisional nature of the transmission). They are made of papers treated with potato juice, and deal with point of connection where information is converted and transmitted. Is this happening in a 1:1 form? Or what are the cumulative errors and information falsifications?

Reifying these processes and thoughts, I'll show concrete objects, which have a rather constructed architectural look and feel.

Opening: Friday 24th of June
When: June 24th until end of July, 2022
Where: Phoinix, Štetinova 1, Bratislava, Slovakia

Phases and Parallels: video clip

If you were not able to visit my solo at Krognoshuset in Sweden but would like an impression, you can watch this short clip on Vimeo.

a-book-a-buy

Kjubh Kunstverein is dedicating an comprehensive exhibition to art books. On display are publications that were initiated by the artists and on which they themselves played a major role in the making. Whether catalog or artist's book, as a mass publication or in small editions - the book as a medium has been considered again and again by artists and, like editions, is reproducible. In contrast to a unique copy, it is aimed at a broader public for purchase. The book does not disappear on the shelf, because it is exhibited and displayed. It goes from hand to hand, is browsed, back and forth, lies here and there, can travel and be given away. Buy art as books, buy books as art.

Where: kjubh Kunstverein,Cologne, Germany.
When: 11 until 25. June, 2022. Fri/Sat. 3-6pm.

Kunsthuis SYB

In April I will start the first part of my residency ‘Grund’ at Kunsthuis SYB. The residency period is: April 7 - May 5 and July 18 - 31, 2022.

During my residency in Beetsterzwaag, I will do fieldwork to collect different types of Frisian soil/ grûn. Think of soil textures like sand, loam, topsoil and peat. In doing so, I want to explore the direct surroundings of Beetsterzwaag.

The word for soil in German is Grund. This word not only means soil or ground but also; reason, motive, fundament and cause. It asks for Why?, and is looking deep down for a reasoning. Reason on the other hand unfolds in different meanings, shifting from rationality, argument to cause.

I will use the collected soil to make ceramic glaze out of it. The transformation of one source to another kind of substance interests me very much. Each type of soil will lead to its own aesthetic appearance during firing and sintering. In that way the glaze will tell a story about where it comes from but in an autonomous and poetic way.

Banalities as Catalyst for Creative Resilience

My video work 'Past the Time Between' is part of the digital showcase Banalities as Catalyst for Creative Resilience, curated by Ghazi Alqducy & Yap Sau Bin. It's part of the symposium 'Rombak', organized by Multimedia University (Malaysia), which takes place from 16th Nov. till 16th Dec. 2021.

Artists and filmmakers share their observation, seeing banalities as catalysts, examine and create visual artworks and moving images that break any sorts of norm. Rombak - which means "to reshuffle" in Malay, is about creative resilience. Though a virtual showcase of presenting digital artwork, Rombak celebrates the persistence of artistic creativity in configuring and disrupting what is to come as well as demonstrates stubborn tenacity of creative minds in pressing against the waves.

Pulse

In this exhibition Charlotte Mumm, created a sculptural setting that goes further than the boundaries of haptic form and visible perception. Through a co-production with the olfactory artist Frank Bloem, there is a composition of various odours and fugitive fractions of urban scents released over time and in space. These scents are part of a sculpture which is technically developed together with the artist Lefki Mevissen. Fizzing and scented powder is being activated over time through a circular tube mechanism with water from a dehumidifier. This means that this exhibition will never be the same but always in flux.

What's up and not

Covid-19 centrifuge: Most planned exhibitions were moved to the current year 2021 and 2022. There will be solo/duo/group-exhibitions coming up soon, e.g. at Galerie Tanit in Munich/ Germany and in the lovely artist-run-space hoast in Vienna/ Austria.

My solo at Krognoshuset in Lund/ Sweden is postponed to 2022. Unfortunately, my residency and exhibition at Gachang Art Studio in Daegu/ South Korea, was cancelled due to the pandemic. Hope the program will be back.

What I'm also very much looking forward to, is my stay at Thread in Sinthian, Senegal at some point in 2021. This is a residency run by The Josef and Anni Albers Foundation. Not only do I have deep respect for this foundation and it's founders, but I also very much appreciate the openness and philosophy of this generous foundation. This stay will be supported both by ifa and Stichting Gerbrandy Cultuurfonds. Forward flash to 2022 ... thinking ahead... I'll be living and working in Beetsterzwaag, the Netherlands. Where the vibrant Kunsthuis SYB, invited me to dedicate myself to a project in Friesland.

New studio Square 28

Finally, I have the keys to my dream studio at Square 28 in Amsterdam Westpoort at Heining 3. It's a sustainable, affordable, permanent, cooperative studio-building in, an up-and-coming creative hub on the outskirts of Amsterdam.

Square 28 is a cooperative, meaning that in principle, everyone who moves into one of our workspaces is also a member of the cooperative, co-owner of the building and has a say in how the place will be run. Apart from the benefits that brings in and of itself, we know from experience that working in a space that is co-inhabited by other creative professionals is both inspiring, energizing and fun.

Tag des offenen Ateliers / Open Studio

Please feel welcome to visit me for the 'Open Studio' in Bellwald in the Upper Valais, Switzerland.
Since January, I'm in Switzerland for a residency at artbellwald.ch Through walking and gazing, I fell a bit in love with this landscape. Next to enjoying the outdoors, I have been working in my studio. In my Valais witch's kitchen, I boiled fir cones in a pressure cooker and extracted an intense auburn color. This color I used for drawings, which can be seen at the 'Open Studio" in my scenic mountain village. Hope to see you here!

When: Saturday, February 22nd, 2020 / 3pm to 5.30pm
Where: Kirchenstadel, right behind the church in the old centre of Bellwald, Upper Valais, Switzerland

Doeg Amsterdam. Grüezi Switzerland.

Thanks to a working grant from the association artbellwald.ch, I'll be staying as an artist in residence in Switzerland in January/ February. To be more precise; I’ll be living and working on a snowy mountain in Bellwald in the canton of Valais.

Real Presence Book

I also contributed a small text to this catalogue. It's a throw back to 'Real Presence 2001' in Belgrade with many good and new friends, a visit by Harald Szeemann, diverse happenings -through and through great and vibrating times.

Edited by: Dobrila Denegri, Biljana Tomić, Isidora Krstić / Graphic Design: Maximilian Mauracher, Nicoletta Dalfino Spinelli / Published by' nKA / Ica - Independent Cultural Association' in Belgrade. / Book contents: Curatorial texts by Biljana Tomić and Dobrila Denegri, and more than two hundred contributions in textual or photographic form.

“Real Presence” started in Belgrade, Serbia in 2001 as an international encounter of young artists and art students, and in the ten following years it became a wide platform that totaled 1790 “presences”. (...) The “Real Presence” book on one hand represents a collection of statements by a number of its former participants who are active and affirmed protagonists within the contemporary art scene today, and on the other, a collection of reflections on different teaching approaches and methods by artists and curators who are engaged in education. The book commences with the late 60s, when international artistic manifestations started taking place in Belgrade, where some of the key figures of post World War II art were involved, up to most recent productions of artists who attended “Real Presence” between 2001 and 2010. The book is a document of distinct historical moments, which simultaneously intends to be a tool for re-imagining ways of artistic gatherings, collaborations, and joint liabilities for the future.

Trugbild

Group exhibition with Michael Fieseler, Steffi Jüngling, Charlotte Mumm, René Wagner, Mareike Wieland.

Vorsicht scheint also geboten.

Opening on Friday, November 23rd at 6pm
Where: Südflügel Kulturbahnhof, Franz Ulrich Str. 6, 34117 Kassel
When: November 24th – December 16th, daily 2-6 pm

There is a wall to be crossed, and I am the wall

A collaborative, process-driven platform for contemporary art and experimentation 'There is a wall to be crossed, and I am the wall’ is a project to explore and question the core elements of art curation and creation. This initiative has formed a creative group with participants, who come from all over the world. Nevertheless, the majority of members lives and works in Amsterdam. Believing that living in and sharing the experience of the city shapes the approach to the following subjects: transparency in thinking and acting / city structures / labour / community / contemporary society and culture / ideology and social emotions / time and media.
This platform will use multiple formats - from essays and short articles to visuals, external sources and project insights so researchers and fellow curators can pool ideas, prolong and play with the themes explored in the programme.

Justina Nekrasaite, project founder and producer, invited me to take part in this project. Visit >>> There is a wall to be crossed, and I am the wall to see my gif-contribution.

Odradek

Group exhibition at the project space Axel Obiger with Michael Bause, Harriet Groß, Myriam el Haϊk, Charlotte Mumm, Carsten Sievers, Francis Zeischegg.

Opening on Friday, September 27th at 7pm
Where: Axel Obiger, Brunnenstraße 29, 10119 Berlin, Germany
When: September 28th – October 20st, Thursday - Saturday 14 - 19 Uhr

Biased. Pause.

The exhibition 'Biased. Pause.' at Phoinix is the artist's result of The Spur 16/18 residency at Sputnik Oz. It’s a sketch of patterns, prints and objects.
During her stay in Bratislava, Charlotte Mumm worked with patterns. These patterns are based on a dialogue with befriended artists about what patterns mean in their work. Patterns – not just as a visual decoration but- as a psychological process, a structure and imprint. And how rhetorical habits infuse the visual world and vice versa.

In 'Biased. Pause.' the artist is showing the input and outcome of this dialogue in which she approached patterns as a vehicle looking for clarityor objectivity but simultaneously getting more personal. Through the looking glass. This is accompanied by objects, which are dealing with the ambivalent processes in the pattern making and are providing a counterbalance.
